The TJ Winter Drum Line (WDL) season begins with auditions in November, right after marching band ends. Although WDL members are encouraged to participate in marching band, that is not a requirement. Students may audition for battery or pit. Battery consists of snare drums, tenor drums (sometimes called quads), bass drums, and cymbals. Pit includes marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, pedal bells, synthesizer, “the rack,” and other interesting instruments.
WDL rehearsals start after auditions, usually before Thanksgiving. January is a very intensive rehearsal month, with the unit taking advantage of weekends, holidays, and teacher work days to learn their music and drill for the new show. Competitions usually begin in early February and continue through March or into April.
